Preppy History In The Making


Come July, J. Crew is opening its first-ever freestanding men's store right here in New York City, at 235 West Broadway in SoHo.

Pros: Free rein over the madras field shorts, and no waiting in line with the women folk.

Con: No waiting in line with the women folk.

... We like the women folk.

    I kind of hate shopping particularly at stores like J Crew. However, my GF is telling me I need to get it together. Are there any cool stores for men which aren't insane on weekends that you might be able to recommend? Also where do you find good comfortable shoes that don't look geriatric? I would be amazed if you could solve that riddle. Thanks!

    It all depends on how much time and money you want to invest, Alex, and what you’re looking for.

    To be honest, J. Crew is pretty user-friendly compared to some big department stores or a harried sample sale.

    If you’re looking for low-key high-quality resale, try Gentlemen's Resale on the Upper East Side, or Ina Men's Resale in Soho.

    For more formal wear, Brooks Brothers is always a pleasant experience.

    Definitely check out Odin -- rated a "Best of" men’s store by New York magazine – which is offering 30% off almost all stock, from Rag & Bone to Commes des Garçons, through the summer.

    I’m sure your GF would approve of all these choices, but I could probably be more helpful if you tell me the neighborhoods where you shop, and exactly what you’re after.
