Barbour Report

On the shortlist of wardrobe staples every man must own -- along with a black or navy two-button peak-lapel suit; a solid cashmere v-neck; a pair of A.P.C. New Standard's; etc. -- Barbour jackets rank near the top. As the jackets only improve with age, eBay and eBay UK remain totally legitimate resources. If you prefer something off the rack, there's Peter Elliot's Barbour shop uptown, which, through Christmas Day, will take 25% off a jacket of your choosing in exchange for a used coat capable of keeping a homeless person warm through the winter. Expect 50% markdowns in January, but a store clerk promised us that stock will be slight. At Bergdorf's, meanwhile, a clerk just told us to expect 30% markdowns perhaps by next week.

  1. I hate when people say 'every man must own..' I mean, a peak-lapeled suit? I like my new standards, but they might not work for some men. As for Barbour, I'll pass. It's not bad, just different strokes.

  2. hope you meant a notch lapel suit... cause peek lapels are very feminine (prob a better word could be used, but I will refrain).

  3. What makes Barbour must-own? Style, durability, warmth, luxury? I'm tempted to buy, but don't know anyone that owns. I'm hoping someone tells me why they love theirs. Can someone help?

  4. Anon #1: Just an opinion presented as a 'must' for the sake of emphasis.

Anon #2: We mean peak-lapel, but, again, just an opinion.

Anon #3: They're very well-made jackets that, like a pair of cordovan leather lace-ups, are actually designed to improve with age (granted you care for them), not to mention their understated elegance, timeless design, and supreme utility, which make them perhaps the most versatile moderate-weather outerwear on the market.

  5. Choosy,
Does this apply to all Barbour jackets or waxed cotton only/especially?

  6. Yeah, it's really all about the waxed cotton. As long as you take care of them, they're the ones that can last a lifetime, and develop that priceless patina.

  7. Do these jackets keep you warm on the winter? They seem flimsy when I look at them. Hmmm....

  8. They're not designed to get you up Mt. Everest, nor should they be the warmest piece of outerwear in your closet, particularly if you live in the North East or just up North. Some models come with extra lining -- and they're ideal for layering with sweaters and such -- but they're really ideal for foul but still relatively moderate weather.

  9. 25% off at Bloomingdales also but they only had the classic Beaufort in green and blue.

  10. BarBORE ;-)

The collar on these coats border on large/extra-large for it to be considered current. IMHO.
