All Grown Up

Details lays out some new rules for denim. The cardinal rule of not pairing denim with denim still stands… unless, of course, one of those pieces is colored khaki.

Gray Matter

Wednesday though Sunday, Christopher Fischer will be taking up to 80% off his fine, fine cashmere knits. We’re talking cashmere and blended sweaters down from $195-$495 to $40-$150; and cashmere and blended accessories, scarves, and gloves down from $195-$250 to $30-$95.

Criminal Minded

Tuesday through Friday, Clothingline is hosting a sample sale on Rag & Bone (above) and Helmut Lang (below) F/W ‘08. Expect about 60% off, a big turn out, and prized pieces to go early. Can’t make it? Both labels are having sample sales later this month.

The Anti-Icon

The Rag & Bone coat featured in our last post brought to mind the character of Marcel -- a young grilled-out gangster who Catherine Deneuve’s character gets mixed up with in the French film Belle De Jour. Deneuve plays Séverine Serizy, a wealthy young housewife who is lured into high-end prostitution with what Roger Ebert would call “disastrous results.” Because of director Luis Buñuel’s exquisite vision, and the fact that Yves Saint Laurent dressed Deneuve for the film, it’s a true style classic.

Place Your Bets

Ryan over at h(y)r collective just pulled the trigger on this grey wool-cashmere suit for just $230 at Club Monaco. We'd actually hesitate to spend so little on a suit, fearing we'd merely be wasting money on visibly-poor quality, a poor fit, and no shelf-life. Ryan seems happy with his purchase now, but, in the name of science, we plan to put him on the spot and ask him if he feels the same way after a few outings in his new suit. To be continued...

Daft Punk

We wholeheartedley believe that one can dress well without coming off as a self-centered prick... not that Christian here is a great example of that.

It Ain't Easy...

Amid the clearance-like atmosphere at Saks, we were genuinely surprised to find Edward Green shoes marked down by 30%. You’re still paying about $800 for shoes, mind you, but these beauties could easily be passed down for a generation or three. Otherwise, there’s always eBay where you can find Green’s for $1.50 to $450.

Relax, Have Hope, AND SPEND!

It’s not The Beggar's official business to document retailer’s window displays or marketing campaigns around town. But, it’s time to start making exceptions when those displays and campaigns address the recession specifically… or not so specifically as in the case of the above window from one of James Perse’s Bleecker St. boutiques. "Just Breathe," it reads. Relax, and do a little shopping, it suggests.
Ironically, the Rogan/Loomstate clearance sale that began today is quite literally taking place in the shadow of a bottoming-out stock market courtesy of this Johnnie Walker wall display.
How's the Rogan sale, you ask? Quite good, we say, and priced as follows:

• Denim - $60
• Shirts - $55
• Knits - $60
• Jackets - $80-$90
• T’s - 20

The Votes Are In

So, 70% of the roughly 60 of you who voted said “Black Friday” means nothing. It’s about what we expected, because, on one side, New York guys don’t operate like most Americans, while, on the other, it is a day off on the eve of giving season. The sales are irrelevant because -- this year anyway -- they started well before, and should extend well after Black Friday. Add to that the fact that a lot of people aren’t even shopping on what is supposed to be the biggest shopping day of the year.

The Etro shirt pictured above, however, can actually be had at Saks.com right now for over 70% off.

"We All Fall Through"

C-C-C-Classics

The Moment discusses classic, timeless men's wear and accessories with  Justin Saunders, the "creative force" behind photo curating site Jjjjound. Take notes.

The Good ... And The Ugly

Two very respectable Chelsea boutiques -- and believe us when we tell you there are plenty that aren’t -- are now taking about 30% off most in-store stock. The more refined of the two, Camouflage is taking 25-35% off its well-edited selection of Smedley, Etro, Paul Smith, and C.P. Company.  Gerry’s, meanwhile, is taking 30% off its shelves of Ted Baker, John Varvatos, Converse, and True Religion.

Fire!

Celebrated Seattle boutique Blackbird debuted its e-boutique yesterday, and, what do you know, it’s even got a little sale section. The mark-downs are rather insignificant, however, and most of the labels that Blackbird carries are presently hosting sales right here in New York. Nom de Guerre, Opening Ceremony, and Acne, anyway.

Design houses from Dolce & Gabbana to Dsquared2 would have you believe that pajamas are going to be big in ’09. Sticking to the bedroom for now, luxury sleepwear maker Natori’s men’s collection goes on sale at Gilt.com at 12 noon today. HERE’s your invite to the members only site.

Smooth Operator

Through the New Year, Operations boutiques are taking 25-35% off everything in stock. “And we’ll take off more if we like you,” says one sassy sales associate. Material Interest just featured this calfskin-leather coat, which retails for $995, but is now 25% off.

Online, right this second, you can find:

• Oak plaid flannel shirts with quilted lining down from $220 to $150
• Opening Ceremony shawl collar cardi's down from $290 to $200
• Rick Owens heavy-weight twill parkas down from $1,600 to $1,100

Mark Your Territory

(Black) Friday through Sunday, Gargyle will be taking 30-70% off much of its stock in store and online. In store, however, the L.E.S. boutique plans to offer various promotions -- like buy something and get something else at an additional 10% off, and so forth.

**Update: As of Thursday, 12/4, the sale's still on at Gargyle -- online and in store... but more in 30% off territory than the 70% off territory**

Fit Knits

Likely through the New Year, Nom de Guerre is taking 30% off select items. The store’s multi-level bunker -- once a meeting place of the Black Panthers -- carries military-inspired sportswear, including pea coats, windbreakers, striped knits, and printed T’s.

Obama Approved

Through the Holidays, both Buckler boutiques are taking 25% off the British label’s well-made, nightlife-ready jackets, vests, T’s, and pants. Each store is also carrying leather jackets from last season at 40-50% off. Shoes and accessories are not being marketed down.

White Light

Today through Dec 7, Saks is taking an additional 50% off items that were already marketed down by 40%.

**Update: A reader writes in from the front lines -- "Hit the 7th floor at lunch. Lots of merchandise still on the floor but its a bit of a mess. Some of their markdowns are still full price a few blocks uptown. Getting someone to help you in shoes is pretty much hopeless. Go with a lot of time to spend...."**

Separate from that in-store promotion, here are a few finds from the Web site:

• Theory “Lennon” jacket down from $300 to $90
• Versace double-breasted pea down from $1250 to $440
• Etro plaid cotton shirt down from $300 to $85
• Zegna half-zip sweater down from $675 to $200

Future Knits

Today through next Tuesday, December 2, get to the DDC Lab sample sale for 80-90% off the label’s bamboo tees, reflective climate-control jackets, and somehow-technologically enhanced chunky knits.

**Update: "This sale was awful," says one trusty reader. "A lot of the clothing isn't DDC Lab or even archive samples, just old crap they threw in there. Very few jackets and lots of boxy, straight leg denim. Not recommended."**

Princes And Peacocks

Will of A Suitable Wardrobe takes a crack at describing the subtle differences between British and Italian traditional men's wear.

"First and foremost, Italian style is about dressing to look good," he writes. "Turning the ladies' heads is part of the game. This is radically different from British style, which has historically been about dressing to fit in." [ASW]

Alligator Accessories

Online and in stores, Lacoste is taking 30-40% off tons of shirts, pants, knits, light outerwear, and accessories -- like this solid wool scarf marked down from $85 to $50. But, keep in mind that the label's semi-annual sale is coming up at the end of the year.

**Update: According one reader, Sherman's "doing 60% off Sale and 50% off all suiting separates."**

***Update: As of Thursday, 12/4, Ben Sherman is still in serious sale mode, which could continue all the way through the New Year.***
