Style, Hands-On!

Esquire regularly dispenses with the fit and quality tips, which we thoroughly appreciate because, well, what's a wardrobe without fit and quality? Really, though, what these tips teach us is that shopping is a seriously HANDS ON experience!

Fabric needs to be squeezed between your fingers -- "If it bounces back with little or no sign of wrinkling, that means it's good, sturdy material," Esquire notes. Buttons need to be tugged gently -- "If they feel loose or wobbly, that means they're probably coming off sooner rather than later." (That's the big problem with e-shopping -- Despite all the deals, it doesn't permit squeeze or tug tests until a product arrives at your door. No returns, therefore, equals big risk.)

Even in stores, however, too many guys fail to appreciate the importance of testing, or are under the false impression that it's poor manners. On the contrary, it's the mark of an experienced shopper -- That and what you're wearing at the moment. Really, a salesperson is far more likely to offer a touchy-feely customer a deal or some inside information than one with arms-crossed. So, touch and feel away! Just be sure to wash your hands first.

Do-Gooder Discount

Calling all do-gooders! Through the end of March, the sustainable shoemakers at Terra Plana are offering 50% off all stock -- online and in store -- to society's "key workers," i.e., police officers, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, dentists and dental hygienists, paramedics, vets and veterinary nurses, "community support officers", public sector workers, "ministry of defense personnel", teachers, nursery nurses, prison officers, probation service staff, social workers, traffic wardens, environmental health officers, and "care coordinators". Sadly, deal bloggers failed to make the cut.

Raw Debate

We absolutely applaud the renaissance that raw denim has experienced in recent years, but it has made for some difficult navigating. Mercifully, some top manufacturers, sellers, and bloggers -- along with writers, poets, musicians, environmentalists, and students -- have come together to put over 25 top brands to the test. Denim Debate was conceived to "showcase the best in premium denim while, at the same time, shining a light on the personalities that wear and have a passion for it," writes organizer and [you have broken the internet] blogger Ryan Plett. Think of it as a menswear Manhattan Project. Hey Ryan, Let's do shirts next!

Theory Sample Sale

Tuesday through Saturday, 2/23-2/27, Clothingline is hosting a Theory sample sale featuring outerwear for $60, knits for $30, shorts for $35, T's for $15, .... It's unlikely that this event will stand up to Theory's own sample sale in November, but that's history.

Oh, and if you're not in town, but still have a hankerin' for Theory, know that its online store just debuted.

The Grosgrain Refresher

There's no more affordable way to punch up a wardrobe than with accessories, and few are cheaper (and punchier) than a bold grosgrain watch strap. "It works with almost any simple, slim watch," notes The GQ Eye. Not so much "with a larger, chunkier chronograph style." London's Smart Turnout has a handsome selection (of straps) for less than $30 each, but our own city's sure to be teeming with the stuff in about a month.

Kick-Around Brogues

The best advice is often the simplest advice. Blogger Unabashedly Prep says, "Go Brogue, Not Broke." Sure, at some point in his life, every man deserves a pristine pair of Church's to care for and call his own. (It's potentially the best investment he'll ever make.) But, as U.P. explains, "A used pair can tide you over until you’re ready to splurge." Last summer, I scored an immaculate pair of Allen Edmonds McAllister's (retail price $325) for $30 at a moving sale in the West Village. U.P. found the above Cole Haan's for $20 on eBay.

Used dress shoes also make perfect "kick-around" shoes -- ideal for rough treatment, and one's off-hours when lesser men resort to ratty kicks and those inexcusable hybrids (part dress shoe, part sneaker). You know who you are.

Barneys Warehouse Sale, Part 3

As of Monday morning, 2/22, Barneys Warehouse Sale was taking an additional 20% off sneakers, accessories, ties, and sports jackets with yellow tags (about half of the displayed stock).... That's in addition to the 25% off casual sports shirts and casual pants we told you about last week... and those tuxedos.

We're again surprised by the slow pace at which Barneys is implementing markdowns. With less than a week left, still no action in the key areas of suits, coats, dress shirts, and dress shoes. Odd.

Times: "We Are All Sale Shoppers Now"

Since his appointment earlier this year, Times "Critical Shopper" Jon Caramanica has certainly kept us on our toes. (To date, he's explored Americana's underpinnings at Dave's New York, and examined the remaking of a mega-brand at American Eagle's Time Square perch.)

Now, knocking us clear off our feet, Caramanica ventures into the bowels of the city's most notorious blowout, the Barneys Warehouse Sale! A priceless read for any self-respecting New Yorker, the review begins: "It's where my mother took me to get a proper suit in high school, and where Benjamin Bixby oxfords and plaid shirt-smocks from Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony go to die." Yes!

Bigger picture, Caramanica notes that the Barneys sale is "no longer the only game in town." On the contrary, "We are all sale shoppers now, trained to hold our breath until prices fall, which they inevitably will." Beggar like.

Barneys Warehouse Sale "Markdowns"

The word 'markdowns' is in quotations because, after nearly a week of Barneys' Winter Warehouse Sale "madness," only the tuxedos were on sale as of Tuesday morning. (Madness is in quotations because this season's sale has been pretty tame.) One clerk said to expect additional markdowns by the end of the week. Another said not to expect any until next week. We trust the former, but we'll keep you posted.

Note: Simply by virtue of its size, Barneys Warehouse Sale has always been an easy target for critics. This latest iteration, however, has many readers vowing to never visit the sale again. "It's really the same sh*t recycled sale after sale," says one. "Worst stuff I've seen in a long time," says another. "Really bad this time." These days, we're sure Barneys has bigger concerns than consumers' perception of its warehouse sale. Still, it obviously counts on the biannual events to recoup lost profits, and fewer shoppers makes that prospect less likely. Our advice? Get your sh*t together, Barneys Warehouse Sale!
