Must See: Objectified

Tuesday night on Thirteen, we caught Gary Hustwit's latest documentary about product design, "Objectified." The film, which features design gods like Apple's Jonathan Ive and Muji's Naoto Fukasawa, investigates our emotional relationships with products, our unrelenting obsession with "the new," its cultural and environmental repercussions, etc. Fascinating stuff, and required viewing for every modern consumer. From the doc, we love the idea of separating products into two categories: those that you wear in, and those that you wear out. (We heartily recommend the former.) Also, to tame our nation's consuming mania, another interviewee suggests a billion dollar marketing campaign hyping products that people already own... though we imagine a resourceful grass-roots organization could do it for far less.

Save The Tailors

Robot-engineered bespoke suits for under $500? Without explicitly endorsing these miracles of science, Urban Daddy confirms their existence, and right here in New York City. Flatiron-based Alton Lane still cuts its suits by hand, but leaves it up to technology (first developed for airport security) to take your precise measurements. We're equal parts intrigued and skeptical. Really, it's a suit's materials and construction -- along with the skill required to assemble its disparate parts -- that makes it expensive. We'd be very interested to see what these guys can do for less than $500.

Fool Me Once...Surface To Air Sample Sale

On the first day of last year's Surface To Air sample sale, we were heartbroken to learn that all the good stuff -- the collective's coveted leather bombers, bags, etc. -- had disappeared at a "friends & family" event the night before. Officially, this year's sale runs from Friday through Sunday, 11/13-11/15, which means that a pre-sale event will most likely go down Thursday night at, say, 6-ish.

For the record, however, we can't absolutely guarantee a pre-sale, or easy access. The solution? If one of you goes and gets it, let everyone else know with a tweet!

Wednesday, 11/11, from 3pm-8pm, Metropolitan Pavilion is hosting the "private" portion of its Roberto Cavalli sample sale -- but it's looking pretty accessible. Officially, the sale is open to the public from Thursday through Saturday, 11/12-11/14.
