Meet: Beggar Invitational

Introducing "Beggar Invitational" -- Your daily menu of deals from so-called "invitation only" sample sale sites. For the record, these popular e-tailers no longer require invitations. They might ask you to "request membership," but all requests are promptly accepted. Their sales, meanwhile, remain time-sensitive -- typically a few days -- and often quite attractive. Oh, and if we somehow highlight a brand, that means we're especially excited about the fact that it's on sale. [Pic courtesy of Esquire]

Trussardi 1911 50% Off

Acknowledging -- if begrudgingly -- that Filson ain't for every guy, I thought it worth mentioning that Italy's own Trussardi 1911 is presently taking 50% off some very nice bags. The "Boston" above is down to about $470, to which you'll have to add $25 for shipping.

Fjällräven 30% Off

Swedish outdoor brand Fjällräven, which set up shop on Mott Street earlier this season, is now taking upwards of 30% off select stock. Its Expedition Down jackets -- considered a national treasure back home -- are, um, down to about $600. Designed in 1974, the construction of the Expedition is like two separate jackets that have been sewn together to make two chambers of warmth.

According to our favorite fashion historian, Bill Cunningham, the down coat was actually invented back in the '30s to wear to the opera! Hear the full story behind what Cunningham calls, "next to bluejeans and denim, the biggest fashion discovery of the modern age" here.

The Age Of Reason

GQ just named the six finalists in its 2010 "Best New Menswear Designers in America" competition. And the nominees are: First, let me congratulate the contenders, and then GQ for recognizing those designers that have successfully shined in the current climate of restraint. Any FIT dropout can turn heads with decadent diamond-encrusted Day-Glo man-dresses, but it takes talent to do inspiring work within the limits of reality -- and the male version of reality in particular. Based on these six standouts, men's wear is heading in the right direction. A few years ago, for example, who'd have predicted that J. Crew would be leading a style revolution driven by a confident return to quality, value, and age-spanning design. My hat goes off. (The winner will named February 12.)

Welcome To The Conversation

On Fashionblogs from Mary Scherpe on Vimeo.

If only to hear Suzy Menkes use the word "sucks," this brief exploration into the impact blogs are having on fashion is worth a watch. Of note, Menkes reminds consumers to remember that bloggers are often partial to particular brands, and increasingly susceptible to "seeding," i.e., promoting a brand or product at the behest of its maker or marketing team. More broadly, the idea that new platforms and technologies are transforming the marketing mix from monologues to "conversations" is by now well known. Still, I think it's worth pointing out that this is The Choosy Beggar's reason for being -- to encourage conversations with a unique focus on value. [Selectism]

Abercrombie & F#@%'ed

Man, I wish every brand the best, but couldn't not feel some schadenfreude on the news that Abercrombie & Fitch just recorded it 21st consecutive month of sales declines -- leading one retail analyst to note that the store's "business model now appears fully broken." Apparently, those droves of tourists that flock to A&F's 5th Avenue flagship for overpriced tween thongs aren't keeping the (wet) dream alive. The issue, say analysts and trade media types, is price -- they're too high, and they don't mark them down. The moral of the story? All the marketing in the world can't gloss over a poor value proposition. [The Cut]

The Shows Go On

Albeit at a stiff-arm's length, I do, er, acknowledge the circuses that are fashion shows. For all their self-indulgent wackiness, they do reflect modern culture and events, and even inform what die-hard traditionalists call "timeless style."

From the Paris shows, which ended Sunday, Times columnist and fiery fashion skeptic Cathy Horyn sends good news: Versatility -- that great bestower of value and convenience -- is in! In particular, Horyn says with regard to Louis Vuitton designer Paul Helbers: "Designers often talk about blurring the line between formal and casual, and then proceed to define each as rigidly as possible, with casual being a potluck of sports and ethnic garments ... and formal being business suits ... Mr. Helbers, though, actually balances the two."

Meanwhile, The Times' Suzy Menkes perceived the Paris shows to be "all about handling the heritage. Should you shake it, break it or fake the style of the past?" Interesting, but the idea that perpetuating heritage isn't an option -- only faking it -- is a bit depressing. Likewise, Heraclitus believed that, "You can't step into the same river twice," i.e., nothing stands still because change is a central doctrine of the universe, which actually makes the perception of "timeless style" just an illusion.

Dropping The Work Boots

Having a little fun with "heritage-heads" -- i.e., guys who fetishize and sentimentalize classic American workwear -- new New York Times "Critical Shopper" Jon Caramanica visits Dave's New York, a modest Modells-esque Sixth Avenue shop that has serviced the city's blue-collar workers for nearly half a century.

"Never before in men’s style has looking rugged been such an expensive proposition: art directors and architecture students jaunt around the city in jackets from Woolrich Woolen Mills or Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony and skinny black jeans scrunched up at the bottom over bulky boots from the Nom de Guerre-Red Wing collaboration," Caramanica writes.

"But what of the thousands more struggling somewhat further down the economic ladder?" Caramanica asks -- to which I'd add those of us unwilling to spend $500 for a flannel. "For them, there's Dave's..." -- to which I'd add sales, vintage shops, eBay, StyleForum, ...

Bigger picture, Fashionista is suggesting that "Americana" -- a term Dave's itself uses to describe its gear -- has peaked as a trend. ACL's Michael Williams, arguably the movement's official spokesman, agrees. "I think Americana is a trend most likely at its peak or near the height of its popularity," he told the blog. "But, while the bubble may soon burst and many will go back to their drop-crotch Rick Owens, it is my feeling that a substantial appreciation for Americana will persist."

When that time comes, I'll be mourning the loss of Americana's chic status because it is so easy to acquire -- relative to, say, Russian Oligarch-chic -- and, as I've said before, if guys are overpaying for anything, it might as well be truly classic gear that's built to last a really long time.

Greed Is Back

Oliver Stone's WallStreet -- It defined an era of "fuck you" style. Hell, the definitive power shirt -- royal blue with white contrast collar -- takes it name -- the "Gekko" -- from the film's most lasting character. Fast forward over 20 years, and it might be time to give the ol' "Greed is good" spirit another go, and just in time for Stone's sequel, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. Vanity Fair looks into it.

What's In A Dress Shirt?

What goes into the making of a superior dress shirt? "The devil is entirely in the details," writes The Wall Street Journal. "Like the wine market, the ready-made men's shirt world is crowded with products of varying style, quality and substance ... The differences can be subtle -- an extra stitch at the back of a button, a bit of glue inside a cuff -- but those intricacies determine the way a shirt feels against the skin and how it looks after being cleaned."

At Charvet or your neighborhood consignment shop, how does one spot quality? Fabric first, one connoisseur tells The Journal. "It should be firm with a smooth feel ... A consumer can check the density of the weave by holding a shirt to the light ... Light will only partly penetrate a shirt if it's made of quality fabric with a dense weave."

Also check the cuffs and collar for a bit of slack between the outer and inner layers of fabric, and the firmer interior material. "A customer should check that the pocket's stripes or checks are aligned with the background pattern ... The yoke and sleeve lines should match; and the collar stand -- the piece of cloth below the collar that holds the top button -- should line up with the front of the shirt."

To boot, a shirt's seams should have a minimum of 15 stitches per inch. The tail should be long enough to stay tucked into a pair of trousers when a person raises his hand, and the side seams should be reinforced at the intersection of the two parts of the tail with a piece of cloth called a gusset.

The Problem With Sample Sites

What's not to love about sample sale sites like Beyond The Rack, which grant easy access to (oftentimes) great products at up to 70% off retail? Well, for starters, physical sales often offer deeper markdowns, and I much prefer handling a product in person before buying it. (Suits and jackets must be tried on for size, and a digital image will never truly convey how a fabric feels, or what it looks like in the light of day.)

Add to those limitations new claims that some sample sites are artificially inflating their prices. "It's no secret that the world of discounting relies on higher list prices to boost the appeal of leftover merchandise," writes The Wall Street Journal. "But questions about fake list prices are spreading, as the Internet also makes it easier for shoppers to discern whether something is truly at discount or not."

Sale shopping has always been an imperfect science, relying mostly on buyer knowledge and intuition. True or not, these latest accusations of digital price inflation show that -- despite the rise of automated, streamlined systems -- deal hunting still requires plenty of common sense.

L.L. Bean Signiture, In The Bag

Hoping to whet your respective appetites, L.L. Bean has released two bags in advance of its Signature collection's March debut. Designed by one Alex Carleton -- of Rogues Gallery fame -- the line represents the brand's best effort to achieve age-spanning design and construction at reasonable price points. (In a perfect world, this would be the ultimate goal of every clothing company.) [Valet.]

Take your pick between a salt-washed indigo tote for $65, and a vegetable-tanned leather number for $189. Perhaps it's because the shade and handle design remind me of the attache my father toted around the world on business, but I was immediately drawn to the latter, and would gladly put it to work.

Broadly speaking, and as I've said many times, ill-considered bags are responsible for ruining more outward appearances than perhaps any furnishing. Peculiar footwear is the most obvious culprit, but never quite as conspicuous as an overparticular man-purse, a hulking satchel, or the infamous suit & backpack combo.

J. Crew Sample Sale

Some of you chewed me out for not noting the last J. Crew sample sale at Clothingline. (We'd expected another lame showing, but the sale turned out to be, in the words of one reader, "actually pretty decent.") Well, Tuesday through Saturday, 1/19-1/23, Clothingline's at it again, and they're promising plenty of men's wear and footwear.

Still, as another reader insisted last time around: "I absolutely refuse to go to this sale again after going to the last 2 and leaving sooo disappointed ... For a bit more cash, you will have a better experience shopping at the actual store with more options and size selections!"

Report from the field: "Unlike the ghosts of J.Crew sales past, this one is ripe with replenished footwear, Thomas Mason shirts, sweaters (mostly med), wovens (again, mostly med), pants (mostly 32 x 32), and a smattering or outerwear & sport jackets," writes one enthused reader. "Their first sale was still their best, but in comparison with the last 5 this is a close runner up."

Day 2 Report from the field: Kenji of ModSnob writes in: "The sale was good to me on Day 2. I racked up on two Thomas Mason shirts (2 for $90). Everyone must keep in mind that this is a SAMPLE SALE--meaning all size medium or mens 9 (shoes). However Thomas Mason had larges, XLs, and one or two smalls. Knit wear pieces (2 for $55 * I believe). Also, I found a pink gingham for less that $30. Keep in mind that all the '09 shirting is slimmer fit. I found that '08 was a fuller cut. Also the shoe selection is ample. Same shoes from the last Clothing Line sample sale minus the boots. Some suede drivers can be had for $60 ... The tailored garments were few and far between. Sweaters of all material were the hottest items in addition to the cotton tees and polos. I may go back for the unique selection of vests. Don't tell anyone but I also picked up a Rugby toggle front shawl collar knit that was mixed in with the J. Crew merchandise."

Dept.'s Of Tweed & Offending Trad

Holiday travel always allows for a little extracurricular reading, and, this season, some of the better work we encountered at 30,000 feet dealt specifically with men's wear and styles. In Vanity Fair, there was A.A. Gill's love letter to Scottish tweed -- "the great warm coat and the corollary hair shirt of Scotland, the most beautiful and durable and flattering of cloth" -- which also happens to be mixed up in an American boycott of all things Scottish following the release of the Lockerbie bomber to Libya this summer. In The New Yorker, meanwhile, we were treated to Lizzie Widdicombe's snapshot of Rusto Algaba, one of the world's most respected matador tailors, in which we learned that, astronauts aside, bullfighters spend more on their wardrobes than perhaps any professional. Indeed, according to Widdicombe, "A good matador will order between six and ten suits a year, for around three thousand euros (about $4,300) each." In the same Jan. 4 issue of the The New Yorker, Widdicombe's profile of Brooklyn-based band Vampire Weekend -- which, for better or worse, embodies Prep's abiding ability to offend -- is a must read. Paul Stuart 60% Off

Just back from a little skiing and New Year's reveling in Utah, it's been brought to my attention that Paul Stuart is hosting its semi-annual sale featuring up to 60% off F/W stock in store and online. Writes a tipster, "There were some nice shirts on sale ... A few sweaters and ties too ... They had the regular stuff and some Phineas Cole mixed in ... Shirts were between $98 and $125."
