A Sale By Any Other Name...

H(y)r Collective sends word that Nom de Guerre just re-opened the basement section of its downtown shop with spring ’08 at 60% off. [h(y)r]

We’re talking under $200 for light-weight flight jackets… shirts, sweaters, jeans, etc.

The store’s multi-level bunker -- once a meeting place of the Black Panthers -- carries military-inspired sportswear, including pea coats, windbreakers, striped knits, and printed T’s.

Good Man

Marc Scrivo’s our new favorite actor. Not that we’ve seen him in anything, nor had we even heard of him until now... But, the guy's owning his style and speaking our language:

“I love a good bargain, whatever it is,” he tells NY Mag’s Look Book. “It’s important to spend money, but I think it’s important to really look at the resources around us and not waste ... I buy a lot of second-hand because [sic] the same reason why I recycle -- I just think it makes sense, it’s practical.”

Right now, Gilt.com is selling Jack Spade bags at about half-off -- like the above laptop bag for $88 -- and Trovata's brilliant menswear for close to 70% off, like these green cargo shorts for $58:

Everything’s going fast. It’s members only, but the Beggar has your invite HERE.

Head's up! The John Varvatos sale begins August 5 at 12 pm est., and Mosley Tribe sunglasses are on the way.

The Tops

Through Sunday, British label Mulberry is taking over 50% off its top-top-top-of-the-line bags and briefcases. Save for a lucky flee-market find, you're not going to find bags of this quality at these prices anywhere. You even might end up passing one of these puppies down to your kids.

At Mulberry’s Midtown flagship, you’ll find the Barnaby (above), and the Cavendish (below), each for $499, along with the Frith for $499 and the Ashmore for $599 (neither pictured). Downtown, Mulberry on Bleecker is only carrying the Cavendish.

The Closer

On Friday, menswear boutique Sean -- New York’s de facto home to Emile Lafaurie -- is set to open its new downtown location at 199 Prince.

That means you’ve got two more days to catch the clearance sale going down at its soon-to-be-ex-downtown location at 132 Thompson.

We’ve long been fans of Sean’s reasonably-priced, high-quality wares.

And, in case you're wondering, there are no festivities planned for Friday's opening, but a salesman at Sean -- apparently intrigued by the idea -- is looking into it. We'll keep you posted.

Fear No Evil

Oak’s avant-garde shopping experience makes one critical shopper feel alone and afraid -- which actually makes for a hilarious read.

Yet, we can all relate to this Times correspondent’s feelings of alienation from, and contempt for, fashion’s vanguard.

Our advice on the matter? If you’re feeling adventurous, then venture indeed into the realms of high-concept fashion, knowing full well that the whole business is just one big charade.

Otherwise, immerse yourself to the degree that feels right. If that amounts to thumbing through J.Crew’s fall catalogue from the safety of your bathroom, then more power to you. We all know there are far more important battles to be fought.

Flights Of Fancy

For better or worse, Men.Style has published its fall buyer’s guide featuring the top picks from top store buyers from coast-to-coast.

Our advice to you? Look, don’t touch! No sane human being should be spending $2,300 on a fall vest. Rather, take notes, identify a few styles worth working into your look, and pick an item or two you’d like to pick up on sale at a later date.

Can’t resist? Then, your best bet is either the above hunting jackets co-created by Levi’s and Engineered Garments for $350 at Bloomies, or this Trovata plaid shirt for $155 at Saks:

Sultry Nights

Cool Hunting extols the debut LP from Brazilian group Three Na Massa.

Suit You

Esquire lists 7 key boxes to check off before pulling the trigger on your next suit purchase:

1. Shoulder pads end with your shoulders.

2. Your flat hand should slip easily into your suit under the lapels when the top (or middle) button is fastened. If you put a fist in, the suit should pull at the button.

3. The top button of a two-button suit -- or the middle button of a three-button suit -- should not fall below your navel.

4. With your arms at your sides, your knuckles should be even with the bottom of your jacket.

5. Jacket sleeves should fall where the base of your thumb meets your wrist.

6. Between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible.

7. One inch of break.

Fast Times

Today through Thursday, stock up on play clothes from Lower East Side boutique Live Fast for 20% off most stock, including existing sale items. [Racked]

The Ed Hardy garb these guys carry is ridiculous, but, on the bright side, note the similarity between Live Fast's '69 Turbo Tortoise's for $20 (above), and Oliver Goldsmith's highly-coveted Carl's, which retail for over $350 (below):

Part preppy boat shoe, the so-called Lacey’s rear features lacing that wraps around its heel.

At just $45, we're sold, yet Vans.com seems to be stocking every style of Lacey -- including the ones below -- except the black ones above.

Also worth a gander is this more fully developed boat-shoe, named the Zapato del Barco, for $60:

Dare To Dream

The obsessives over at h(y)er collective bring us the inspirational tale of one man and his journey into the bowels of Bloomies to meet his destiny with a pair of Common Projects black leather, laceless dress shoes for the unrivaled price of $145 after tax.

A salesman at Bloomies’ flagship on 59th Street tells us the department store has carried Common Projects kicks for at least three years, but this season their buyers decided to try out the laceless dress shoes in black and white.

Will they do it again? Undetermined. Are there any left for $145? Yes, they’re still around at 50% off, but in nothing larger than a 10 in either black or white.

What Was & What Will Be

Straight from Men.Style’s closets, Tyler Thoreson and Josh Peskowitz sit down with famed fashion blogger/photographer and Men.Style correspondent Scott Schuman, a.k.a., The Sartorialist, to reflect on the recent Paris and Milan men’s shows, including standing O’s for Lanvin, and the misanthropic appeal of Raf Simon's latest collection.

Then, Tyler and Josh treat us to a preview of Men.Style's fall buyers guide featuring hunting jackets co-created by Levi’s and Engineered Garments, masterfully executed Martin Margiela pea coats, tasty Trovata plaid shirts, and some sleek and shiny Ferragamo boots.

Separation Anxiety

Next time you pay full retail for designer goods, do take a moment to picture this here medieval contraption separating your manhood from the rest of your body just as swiftly as the saleswoman who convinced you to part with your credit card swipes it through her register's scanning device. Tre To The Torn

Tretorn’s 1300 square-foot Soho flagship only just opened, but that doesn’t mean we can’t expect major markdowns from the Swedish outdoor lifestyle brand come August. A store clerk just confirmed that Tretorn’s sporty apparel and footwear will indeed go on sale within the next 30 days. We’ll keep you posted.

As is, Tretorn’s merch retails at pretty reasonable prices:

Badda Bing, Badda Boom

Rothman's summer warehouse sale begins today, and, while it runs through August 7, anything worth getting is going to get got within the first few days.

Rothman's doesn’t exactly represent the height of sartorial elegance, but it's a New York institution, and its sample sales give guys the opportunity to find the bargains they're after free from the insanity of women shoppers.

Its first floor offers basics like linen button-downs and polo shirts by the likes of Penguin, Theory, and Scotch + Soda. Downstairs, meanwhile, you’ll find some 2,000 suits from traditional Italian brands like Canali and Corneliani, along with younger, slim-cut suits by Zegna and John Varvatos.

Sold

Men’s Vogue Daily recently profiled eyeglass maker Julie Allinson and her Eyebobs label.

Not only are these frames rich in charm, but at a about $65 a pair -- the cost of a Broadway show! -- they make Moscot's look extravagant by comparison.

Like anything else, we do NOT recommend ordering Eyebobs' glasses online until you've tried them on, which you can do at any of these stores in the city:
