Filene's Wake

We can't recall ever actually buying anything at Filene's Basement, but some people swear by the so-called "off-pricer." It's ultimate value to humanity, however, might now be left to historians to sort out as rumors circulate of its imminent bankruptcy. [WWD]

  1. There's Filene's Basement and 'Filene's Basement'. The former is in what was the basement of a Filene's in Boston. They would get shipments from Saks, Barneys, Louis of Boston, and then have 'automatic markdown' off their reduced prices--one week an extra 25% off, then 50%, then 75%, then if it still didn't sell it gets donated to charity. You could find some serious deals there. The latter is a chain not much better than Marshall's (and I think it consumed the Boston store a while ago).

  2. FYI, the original basement FB and chain FBs are one and the same company. The original closed for "renovations" a year or two ago (and now probably will never reopen).

Whether original or chain, FB has always been the final resting place for post-warehouse sale stock from Saks, Barney's, Louis, etc. -- everywhere in the country, that is, except in NYC. Go to FBs in Boston, DC, etc. and you'll find $50 Nice Collective coats, $70 Etro shirts, $100 Paul Smith shoes, etc. However, for some reason the Manhattan stores do not get the shipments from the high-end stores just blocks away from them, which makes the NYC FBs completely useless.
