Men's wear has matured greatly in recent years, moving -- we think -- in all the right directions. And, while we could never single out one label -- given their disparate visions and financial resources -- as the "best," we think it's useful to narrow the field every season to one brand that we'd shop if, God forbid, we had to shop just one.
And, thanks to a steady stream of shrewd collaborations, vastly improved manufacturing techniques, and a meticulously coherent vision -- for the second season in a row -- that brand is J.Crew.* Not fiercely forward thinking... but who wants to walk around in something fiercely forward thinking? Not what we want to be buried in... just what we'd prefer to wear every day until then. No, these clothes don't dramatically set you apart from the crowd... they just help you look as though you belong to a pretty smart and select category of men.
(*Note*: On sale, there are several brands that could potentially beat out J.Crew for the top spot this season, but we're calculating their overall worth at retail.)
Some of favorite pics for spring include, um, every button-down, the above worsted wool Ludlow two-button suit jacket for $365, ...

I really want to love this blog...but if you really want your opinion on stuff like this post to count, you really need to dedicate yourself to important, timely information on the days that do count. IE. I checked your site non-stop all weekend on the final weekend of the Barneys Warehouse sale. Not a single post. Most guys I know here in the city who would read this blog, plaster their wardrobe with the important sales like that one. It's inexcusable for you to not only post every reduction in a timely manner, but to actually give some feedback of the goings-on that weekend.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's just a hobby and you don't care and that's fine, but if it's not, I think you should step your game up...
I was gonna comment on your post about JCrew: I like it. It's a bold move in NYC on a men's style blog to give props to a mainstream retail brand so big ups.
ReplyDeleteBut then I saw that comment above. You gotta be kidding me, if you don't like the site, get your refund and go somewhere else. This site has more well described visits to men's sales in nyc than anywhere else. It pisses me off to see bullshit like that.
Finally Barney's sale sucked this year, if you got off your lazy ass, you might've seen for yourself.
I second Anon 10:21. You guys do great work and while constructive criticism is always needed, baseless rants reflecting arrogant entitlement are not.
ReplyDeleteyeah, the first anon is an obnoxious, arrogant ass. Choosy Beggar, the blog's great and keep doing what you're doing.
ReplyDelete"I checked your site non-stop all weekend on the final weekend of the Barneys Warehouse sale"
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could have, I don't know... gone to the warehouse sale yourself, and then posted any new and relevant info in the comments section of one of the other Barneys Warehouse posts, or emailed it to the Choosy Beggar? This site works really well not only because of the tireless shopping efforts of Choosy Beggar, but because he shares info his readers send him. He can't be everywhere all the time, after all.
If #1's post is indicative in any way of his general attitude and demeanor, then it's people like him that really ruined my shopping (and living, really) experience in NYC.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I got some of my favorite pieces from sales that I learned about from this blog. It makes me wish I still lived in NYC.
hey anon 7:31... in the words of the immortal jon stewart: "f you".

ReplyDeleteAnother thing to share--I went by Barneys today and there was a bunch of stuff on sale--some from last season, some from Spring. Marc by Marc Jacobs, Rag and Bone, Vince, Loden Dager, APC. Limited selection, and sizes very hit or miss. Generally discounted 50%.
ReplyDeleteThis site covered the hell out of the Barney's sale - just say not to crack, anon poster #1.
ReplyDeleteThis website is the greatest for menswear sale info. Keep up the good work.
And if you have info that you think needs to be posted then send it to the site. I have and it was posted quickly with great comments.
That said I quit going to the warehouse sale years ago b/c I kept seeing mostly the same crap recycled year after year and found very few bargains there for the aggravation of the clusterf*ck Black-Friday-at-Walmart-experience that is the overhyped Warehouse sale.
Anon 8:06, as Hogie Carmichel said "your the tops!"
ReplyDeleteHey Anon 7:31 here...Reading the comments, you would think I wrote something disparaging the author's mother...
ReplyDeleteMaybe I was harsh, but my criticism was fair. Silly me, I forgot all great civilizations, great empires, great businesses, and great people were built with ZERO criticism. I'm sure nobody ever gave Michael Jordan, Arthur Miller or Steve Jobs any criticism.
Choosy Beggar--kudos to you for handling this with grace and understanding.
here's a criticism... you ARE anon 7:31. get your references straight when making citations. as far as the invocation of "great civilizations, etc..." in the words of pope gregory the great... "f you."
ReplyDeleteI am Anon 7:31, that's what I said. Anon 11:44, you're drunk!
