The Drop: Lands' End Canvas

Giving J. Crew a run for its money, Lands' End just debuted Canvas -- a more stylish line that GQ describes as "classic outerwear, fitted shirts, and crazy-soft polos, all at insanely affordable prices." We're talkin' poplin shirts for $30; "heritage" chinos for $40; shawl collar sweaters for $70; and pea coats for $80. Unfortunately, Lands' End doesn't maintain a physical presence in the city, but at these prices we'll take our chances with mail-order.

  1. Those prices really make me question the quality of the clothes. I guess we'll just have to see...

  2. Hear you, James, but early reports have been good, and if any company can do a lot for a little, it's Lands' End. They've historically shared cashmere mills and materials with Ralph Lauren despite far lower price points. Also, with Canvas, Lands' End is targeting a "discerning" audience, which it probably doesn't want to alienate with shoddy construction and crap materials. Like Uniqlo's +J, we're guessing that the company's bean-counters rationalize making little to no profit on these niche lines in return for currying favor with savvy "influencers."

  3. Did this just launch? It all looks very light weight as we head into the winter.
