Pointers:
• Markdowns gradually steepen up to an additional 50%.
• To stay focused, bring a list of desired items.
• Know your measurements beforehand.
• Be aware that the sale is neatly organized by size.
• Know how to buy a suit:
Barneys Warehouse Sale - 255 W 17th St between 7th & 8th - 212-450-8400 - Aug 20-21 8am-9pm, Weekdays hence 10am-9pm, Weekends 10am-7pm - Map
Yeah, yeah. All good advice, I suppose, but where were these guys (or their equivalents) in the 90s? Probably telling everyone how 'right' the suits of that day were and how 'wrong' the suits of the 80s were. Am I the only one who notices that not only do fashions always change, but that there's always a fresh batch of experts around, proclaiming what's current to be the only 'right' way and everything that came before to be a mistake? Especially these days, when the 'classic' looks I'm buying are supposed to last me a lifetime. Bullshit. We're all going to get tired of raw denim, heritage looks and everything else people are raving about today and move onto something new and ghastly. Within 5 years GQ will be mocking everyhing that's hot now. It's going to be, "Engineered Garments... eww. You don't want to look like some douche from the aught years." Wait for it.
ReplyDeleteWhen you're right you're right, Anon. Even the most conservative dresser -- the guy who draws a clear distinction between style and fashion -- would have to admit their vulnerability to shifting cultural aesthetic standards. Regarding suits, however -- while varying fits and lengths will continue to go in and out of style -- it's important to figure what compliments your body/head shape and skin tone. That, and what makes you feel confident and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteBeggar, that is true--about skin tone, body shape, etc. (I think Dressing the Man said about all their was to say on 'permanent style.') Guess I'm just grumpy because I genuinely feel that the designs of today are the best to come along in my lifetime (as a 31 year old) and it grates on me to think that the industry is going to over-hype, wear out, and reject them just like so many lesser trends. Ah, well. Thanks for all your great blogging, by the way!
ReplyDeleteI want photos of anything worth a shit that someone finds at the Warehouse sale - It is the most overhyped mess of old clotehs I have ever seen - I quit going years ago. Seriously show me proof that there is anything not fugly and really a bargain there.
ReplyDeletein this day of 70% sales on new stuff at barneys and coop, how can anyone still be excited about the warehouse sale?
ReplyDeleteoh people, we are shoppers, and everyone loves a good bargain! see you boys in line first thing tomrrow! ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's pretty bad. It seems heavy on purchases for their outlet stores that never saw the floor of Barneys. If you want to pay less for a suit, I think Century 21 is a better bet (and they let you return things). But I'll still stop by.
ReplyDeleteI went by this morning. Looking at shirts i was going to say this was the worst BWS ever. But designer is stronger than usual-actually organized by designers' names. Bet they regret not going to 75% off and clearing more stuff out in store. When is the extra 40% off? Shoes suck, but Barneys shoes aren't anything great in store.
ReplyDeleteAs of today Monday the 31st all the men's is 40% off. Even the shoes! Go get'em!
