  1. went this afternoon, at about 2pm. there is a great selection of styles and sizes; dress shoes predominate, but also boots, loafers, sneakers, boat shoes, etc. 1 style of black leather briefcase at $400, some leather messengers and suitcases ($3-400), a few red nylon bags ($1-200). no real wallets that i saw, just some leather passport holders, coin purses, a rather nice rolled toilettries bag in black nylon, all $69; overall, the accessories section was small. small rack of ready to wear, mostly of plain white shirts ($35), some pants, a few blazers (~$75). this wasn't a bad sale, particularly as i'm a big Bally fan. but the price point is just too high for the shoes. boots $250, dress shoes $200, even sandals were marked at $150; the best deal were slippers at $50. also wooden shoe-trees for $15. i seem to remember the Ferragamo sale about the same time last year was a little less expensive than this one. unless Soiffer Haskin does another round of mark-downs, or you're a huge Bally fan, you might be disappointed.

  3. Soiffer/Haskin always reduces prices after the weekend and then again for the last day of the sale. You can get emails from them when they reduce prices if you sign up on their web page.

  5. i agree anon @2:51. Choosy Beggar needs to step up.

i went on saturday and was pretty disappointed. prices were ridicuously high – you can get stuff cheaper at the outlet. i heard they reduced the prices though today. anyone stopping by to give an update?

I hear you, Anon. While I think the community's own reviews and opinions are what really makes this site great, I do plan on stepping up detailed sale coverage -- and especially so following our April relaunch. In that and countless other ways, The Beggar can be improved enormously as a resource for discerning deal shoppers. In my mind, even the new site will be but a beginning. The criticism is greatly appreciated.

  8. i posted the first review, and went back today after work. mark-downs across the board, but it's mixed. boots now $150, dress shoes $175 (from $200), loafers/moccasin $150 (i think it was $175 before), sandals $75 (from $150), sneakers $75 ($125 before?), slippers stayed at $50. like the wkend, buy 3+ pairs, and get extra 20% off. there were just 3 styles (Daniel and Danube) that were marked at $95 for some reason (i found them rather attractive and bought a pair; they're brogue-styled shoes in goat leather). the briefcase is now $250, and leather bags $150 (a rather ugly brown tote w/ pockets and 1 white messenger). nothing else left in the accessories dept by the time i got there at 6pm. no further discounts for clothing, though the pickings were slim by this point and there were no new additions. overall, there are still a lot of selection and sizes left for shoes. but honestly, prices (particularly for the lace-ups) remain a bit high -- though if you buy in volume and get that extra 20%, then it might be worth your while.
