Times: "We Are All Sale Shoppers Now"

Since his appointment earlier this year, Times "Critical Shopper" Jon Caramanica has certainly kept us on our toes. (To date, he's explored Americana's underpinnings at Dave's New York, and examined the remaking of a mega-brand at American Eagle's Time Square perch.)

Now, knocking us clear off our feet, Caramanica ventures into the bowels of the city's most notorious blowout, the Barneys Warehouse Sale! A priceless read for any self-respecting New Yorker, the review begins: "It's where my mother took me to get a proper suit in high school, and where Benjamin Bixby oxfords and plaid shirt-smocks from Chloƫ Sevigny for Opening Ceremony go to die." Yes!

Bigger picture, Caramanica notes that the Barneys sale is "no longer the only game in town." On the contrary, "We are all sale shoppers now, trained to hold our breath until prices fall, which they inevitably will." Beggar like.

  2. I went back to the BWS today and I thought it was better than the first day. Some stuff I saw--Band of Outsiders shirts (with discount, $95), Commes des Garcons Shirt blazer (still $515), some Marc Jacobs collection stuff. Worth another look.
